Independent Professional Advocacy aims to ensure that individuals who face challenges in expressing their views, understanding information and making decisions receive the help they need to engage with their care and support.
IPA Advocates help to ensure that the individual's voice is central in care and support planning, assisting informed decision-making and meaningful involvement in the process.
The AMW IPA service can provide one to one support to help an individual to:
Understand their current situation
Think about what they want
Gain a clear understanding of their care and support options
Take part in
- Assessment of need
- Care and support planning
- Review of care and support
Participate in statutory safeguarding procedures

.IPA is not....
- A general support service – IPA focuses specifically on access to care and support and involvement with statutory safeguarding.
- A befriending service – Advocates do not provide ongoing companionship or support with social activities.
- A decision-making service – Advocates empower individuals to make their own decisions.
- A mediation service – Advocates are not impartial; they are firmly on the side of the person they support.
- A service that acts on behalf of others – Advocates represent the person, not family members, professionals, or organizations.
Please note: this service is available to people who are 18 years or older, have a learning disabilty and/or autism, are resident in the borough of Cardiff or the Vale of Glamorgan (or whose local authority is Cardiff or the Vale of Glamorgan) and meet the requirements of the Social Services and Wellbeing (Wales) Act 2014, part 10.
