Aspergers Casework Advocacy
What is Casework Advocacy?
Casework Advocacy is provided by professional advocates. These advocates are employed by Advocacy Matters Wales to work alongside an adult with Asperger Syndrome.
They will support this person with a particular issue on a short term basis.Once this issue has been resolved the advocate will stop working with the person with Asperger syndrome.
If this person has more than one issue, the advocate will look at each one separately and will open and close issues as required.
At the moment this service is available in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.
I am a person with Asperger syndrome. What can I expect from my Casework Advocate?
An Independent Casework Advocate is a professional who is employed by Advocacy Matters Wales. They will discuss your problem with you (in private if you require), before any course of action is agreed upon.
An Advocate can …
- Support you to consider your options and make your own choice.
- Support you to find the information that you need.
- Support you to be aware of and understand your rights.
- Support you to speak up for what you want.
An Advocate will not…..
- take someone else’s side
- make a choice for you
- work in your ‘best interest’
(for example; an advocate will not tell you what to do, just because they or somebody else thinks it is the ‘best thing’ for you. They are there to help you identify your choices. They will then support you to understand the probable consequences of each of those choices. The final decision is always yours.)
An Advocate can not…..
- work with you all the time.
An advocate might not be able to help you solve everything, but they will try and help you as much as they can.
Most importantly, they will do their best to make sure you are listened to and respected.
When does your Advocate stop working with you?
When the issue has been resolved, the advocate will close the case.
An advocate might not be able to help you solve everything, but they will try and help you as much as they can.
If you want the advocate to stop working with you for whatever reason, you can tell them at any time and they will close the case.
If you have another issue, you can always make another referral to our Casework advocacy service.
Re: Confidentiality
All discussions are confidential. The advocate will not speak to anyone about the issue that has been discussed (unless you want them to).
The exceptions to this are:
- The Advocate will be required to discuss your case with their line manager for supervision purposes.
- The Advocate may need to discuss your case with the other Advocates at Advocacy Matters Wales, if they need help with your case.
- If the Advocate is worried about your safety, or the safety of others they might have to break confidentiality and speak to someone in authority. The Advocate will attempt to discuss this with you before they do this, if appropriate.
Your file will be kept in a locked cupboard in our office when not in use and only staff at Advocacy Matters Wales will be able to open the cupboard.
